Volvo BM Tractors
Tractors are machines designed to deliver high tractive effort at slow speeds. These machines first began to be used as farm equipment in the 1850s when steam engines were used to pull ploughs. As reliable internal combustion engines developed they began to be use in farm machinery and the farm revolution began. Several manufacturing companies were instrumental in developing farm machinery. Chief among those developing the tractor was the Volvo Company.
The name Volvo is synonymous with quality machinery and this is true of the Volvo BM tractor. Manufacture of Volvo construction equipment began in the 1940's with cooperation between the Swedish company Bolinder-Munktell and the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo. In an effort to satisfy the world's demand for farm tractors the two Swedish companies cooperated to build farm tractors. In 1950 Volvo acquired Bolinder-Munktell and Volvo's construction equipment company was born.

Volvo BM tractors came in all sizes and a variety of horsepower. The 1950s were the pinnacle in Volvo tractor manufacturing. Volvo BM made tractors, combines and equipment for the forest industry. Initially Volvo manufactured tractors that use gasoline but as diesel fuel became more popular they switched their engines to diesel. In addition to pulling a plough Volvo place a loader on the front of their Volvo BM tractor which made the machine more versatile.
Volvo began to manufacture construction equipment in 1954 by turning the Volvo BM tractor around and placing the loader over the larger wheels now in the front for better traction. With the development of the wheel loaders from the Volvo tractors equipped with articulated arms a new era in construction equipment was born.
Volvo BM tractors were manufactured until 1984 when the tractor division was sold to Valmet. Volvo BM tractors can still be seen working fields and at farm equipment auctions.
