Foden Trucks

Foden trucks got their start back in 1856 as a bus and truck manufacturing company. The origin of the brand came from the city of Sandbach which is in Cheshire England. At the onset of the company, Edwin Foden Sons & Co. created various steam powered vehicles ranging from huge industrial engines to small steam engines as well as agricultural machinery in the 1880's. The company experienced quite an evolution as steam was replaced by diesel in the 1930's, but the Foden steam vehicle was considered by most to be the best model of it's time. This model was extremely successful and was the foundation for many variations of the this original Foden Lorry for thirty years up until the inception of diesel. The appearance of the 1930 Foden Steam Lorry is quite fascinating, almost appearing as a hybrid of a train (the front end) and a truck (the rest of the body).

The future for Foden was inevitable, diesel trucks. In 1950 they created a rear engined model, which was ahead of its time. In 1958 a new light weight material was introduced, called glass-reinforced plastic, and they used it in mass cab production. The 1959 Foden S20 Dropside was a classy looking model, built for serious work. 1964 saw an even lighter model as the chassis changed from tractor types in order to be more competitive. The 70's found the Foden Co. in a slump, only to be brought out by military contracts. But, in 1980 PACCAR, an American company took over Foden, and thus they became a branch of PACCAR. Then, PACCAR took over Leyland Trucks in the late 90's as well as DAF trucks. They ceased production of the official Foden models at this point, and slapped the Foden name on the DAF trucks. As the DAF production rose, Foden faded out, even in name and the last "Foden" truck was released in 2006. Thus ending the 150 year production of Foden Trucks. Their last model, was an 8x4 rigid, and was retired at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum.

Foden trucks are still supported by various part companies, and many used Foden trucks for sale can be found on Mascus UK.
